On Monday, September 1, the University of Michigan invited Ann Arbor’s student athletes to an exhilarating “Welcome Home” event. The evening began with activities specifically tailored toward the freshman in the Junge Center. SAAC’s newly appointed President Cooper Charlton addressed the freshman class with a riveting speech, congratulating the new Wolverines for becoming Michigan Men and Women, and welcoming them into the Michigan family. With the group buzzing with excitement, SAAC ensured that “The Victors” was engrained in each mind by teaching the class of 2018 our fight song – fist pumps, claps, and all.
The freshmen then moved to the Crisler Center where they were greeted by thunderous cheers and music by the upperclassmen athletes. The cheers slowly died down when University celebrities Dave Brandon and Greg Harden took the stage. Each defined and expanded upon what it means to be a Michigan student-athlete with Bo Schembechler’s legendary mantra, “the team, The Team, THE TEAM” at the core.
To conclude the night, SAAC delivered copious amounts of food to the student-athletes from popular Ann Arbor restaurants. The feast included a wide arrray of cuisine: Chinese, Mexican, Soul Food, and classic American Burgers. The athletic department really knows a foolproof way to the heart of their athletes: food.
From the learning of “The Victors” to the eclectic collection of food, it was a tremendous evening that said “Welcome Home” in true Michigan style.
